Downtown Montreal

From great shopping to lively concerts, there’s always something entertaining to do in Montreal’s bustling Downtown area.

This part of the city is a hub of activity and entertainment, with a constant buzz circulating around the many concert halls, shopping districts and urban spaces. Downtown is also home to the largest underground complex in the city – and, in fact, the world – Underground City.

Downtown is notable for its towering glass skyscrapers, but it also has its fair share of culture, including more than 30 beautiful concert halls and great museums, making it an ideal spot to visit on your first day in Montreal. Get to know the city through its unique shopping, elegant architecture and local art.

The Underground City is definitely a huge attraction in this area, despite being hidden away underneath the surface. Perfect for late-night shopping, this huge complex, including 33 kilometres of walkways, is as much an exciting tourist experience as it is a great place to shop. The famous Promenades Cathédrale, which was originally built to help support the sinking cathedral above it, and is the basis for the mall, is a must-see.

For some fresh air, head back to the surface to explore Saint Catherine Street, a promenade full of boutique shops and great cafes. For a bite to eat, Crescent Street is ideally located and presents a nice range of dining options. Then head west to the Golden Square Mile, home to exquisite old Victorian mansions and one of the country’s elite universities – McGill University.

Art and culture is an important part of Montreal’s heritage, particularly in Downtown, so make sure you visit the city’s largest museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Displaying a fine collection of international art, it also showcases art from Montreal and around the country.

Downtown is easily accessible and covers quite a large expanse of land, so plan to spend a full day or more exploring the area. Arrive by metro and alight at one of the stops on De Maisonneuve Boulevard, where you can continue on foot to Saint Catherine Street. There are a few areas where paid parking is available for those arriving by car.
