This elegant landmark in Old Montreal is one of the most visited attractions in the city, with thousands of people crossing the threshold every day to be enthralled by the strikingly lavish interior and the neo-Gothic architecture. The Notre-Dame Basilica was once the largest place of worship in North America, and has often attracted international attention, most notably during Pope John Paul II’s visit in the 1980s.
The exterior, neo-Gothic facade of the basilica stands proud and tall among the heritage buildings of Old Montreal. However, it is the incredible interior of the church that continues to wow people from all around the world.
Bathed in a deep orange glow with complementary blue tones running throughout, the inside of Notre-Dame is, quite simply, breath-taking. The altar is incredibly detailed, with a divine ambience surrounding it, while the ceiling features intricate décor, including gold stars and vaulted architecture.
The huge pipe organ at the back of the church, which dates from 1891, helps to balance out the altar, while the stained glass windows are just as opulent as the rest of the building. These stained glass windows differentiate themselves however, as they recall the history of Montreal rather than a scene from the Bible. Make sure you visit the smaller chapel inside, known as Notre-Dame de Sacré-Coeur, too.
Those wishing to learn more about the history of the basilica should join the guided English tours that are very regularly available. The price for the tour is included in the admission fee, so it is well worth the time.
There are also longer, one-hour tours available during the high season, but they incur an additional fee. This tour takes you around the sacristy, baptistery and more. A wonderful opportunity to watch the organist play the preserved pipe organ at the back of the church is also possible for a further small fee.
Located in Old Montreal, the Notre-Dame Basilica can be spotted from all over the neighbourhood, with its two tall towers rising into the sky. It is easily accessible by metro and bus with limited paid parking spaces available in a nearby garage.
