Sign up for a guided tour of the building, which was the site of a steel mill from 1939 until the museum was founded there 70 years later. Browse the museum’s extensive collection of modern art, which includes over 1,300 separate pieces displayed in four different exhibition halls. The museum is home to paintings and movies, as well as many more abstract works.
Head to the Ironworks Room (Sala de Fundiciones) to watch an art house movie projected onto the wall. Another highlight of the museum is its collection of work by Debora Arango, a celebrated artist from Medellín. Attend a public presentation by a local artist or enroll in a creative workshop to channel your own artistic side.
Adjoining the museum is an animated plaza, which is spacious and has a pleasing ambience. Linger here a while to enjoy lovely views of the fountains and the pyramid-shaped façade of the museum. The neighbouring Ciudad del Rio Park is a favourite spot for picnicking families, skating children, and locals playing soccer.
If the on-site restaurant Bonuar does not take your fancy, choose from one of the cafés and restaurants on the plaza. There are also a number of bars, some of which host live music in the evenings.
The Medellín Museum of Modern Art is near to the centre of Medellín, located near to the subway stations of Industriales and Poblado. The southern bus terminal of the city is some 10 minutes away by taxi. After visiting the museum, continue on to explore the trendy cafés and stores of the Poblado district.
