Push the pedal to the metal and take a trip to the weird and wonderful world of a museum teeming with unique vehicles.
Priding itself on finding unusual, quirky items, the Lane Motor Museum really is like no other. From its inception as a personal collection of 70 vehicles owned by Jeff Lane to its evolution into America’s largest collection of European cars and vehicles, this museum is a car nut’s paradise.Situated on the massive premises of a former bakery, the museum is home to over 300 vehicles, 150 of which are displayed on a rotating basis. Displaying a host of cars unlikely to ever grace an American highway, the collection is organised by country of origin with most of the vehicles dating from the 1950s to 1970s.Let the kids have their own fun with driving video games and colouring books in the indoor play area while you stroll around the museum admiring rows upon rows of shiny, polished vehicles.Enter a wacky world where amphibious, propeller-powered cars with skis are the norm. Have your picture taken beside a mini Mini or gaze at the three-wheeled oddities on show. It’s not only zany cars that are on display here though those who appreciate the need for speed can marvel at the swift Caterham Blackbird and the classic 1975 Maserati Bora. One of the most impressive things about this museum is that most of the vehicles could be driven right off the showroom floor, with 90% of its collection in running order. Lane Motor Museum is also home to a Guinness World Record holder – a Peel P50 that holds the record for being the "Smallest Street-Legal Car” in the world. It seems like an ant compared to the museum’s largest vehicle, an amphibious, decommissioned U.S. Army landing vehicle whose mighty 3.8-metre-tall tyres are about three times higher than the entire Peel P50.If unique, out-of-this-world vehicles are your thing, then head 5 kilometres south-west of Nashville city centre and visit the Lane Motor Museum on Murfreesboro Pike. The museum is open Thursday to Monday and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
