"We had the ocean view room on the second floor. It was newly renovated, with a beautiful private bathroom and beautiful wood work throughout. We were a bit spoiled when we were there, since there were no other guests on our floor during our stay. The kitchen and living room were spacious and well equipped, and Josh was always there to help us if we needed it. We would definitely stay here in the future"

"This was amazing! Great staff, great location AND there's even a swimming hole (5 min walk, if that) with a waterfall! I've never stayed in a shared house before, but this one has spoiled me! It's close enough to be able to drive to all the good tourist spots. Oh, and hopefully you're there for the "big" farmers market on Saturdays. If I get back to the Big Island I'll be coming back here! Thank you for the great time!"

"I think this is the best kept secret of Hilo. We loved sitting on the porch looking at the gorgeous view of the large green yard with many fruit trees and huge palm trees in the distance. We walked through the backyard to a river with waterfalls. The hosts are available and helpful. The breakfasts full of exotic fruit were amazing. This stay alone was one of the highlights of our trip to HI. Guest books were full of grateful entries that went back for decades."

"I don't think you could ask for a better location to be based at in Hilo. Charlotte was accommodating, prompt and clear in communicating with us for our stay. The house is spacious both inside and out. It was especially nice for everyone in our group to have their own bedroom and private bathroom. The communal spaces invited gathering for great conversations. The waterfall view from the attached patio was especially nice and under-photographed in the listing. The waterfall and koki frogs provided effective white noise for bedtime as all windows were open and fans (thankfully very quiet fans) were on for the evening time as there is no AC (disclosed) for this property. If you are a very hot sleeper and go to bed early, you mind find it stuffy in the evenings if not used to the tropics. This was expected and a non-issue for our group. Our only quote "issues" with our stay that may impact some are just that the property is historic and thus everything has character - window, doors, floors are creaky/old, bathroom tub/showers are small, etc. You are paying for a large space, spectacular outdoor environment, and location. Everything else will feel dated as the property was built in 1916 and largely as it was apart from some updated electrical and an excellent selection of local art. If you are into a historic stay with character this is lovely. If you are looking for modern amenities and design, this is not your stay but then again neither would Hilo be for you."

"One of the best rentals we've stayed at, and we've stayed at a bunch! The backyard we spectacular! We loved the hottub, outdoor shower, waterfall/pond to feed the fish, and the landscaping was gorgeous - plenty of spots to sit outside in the shade and out of the rain if it's raining. The inside was comfortable and just the right amount of space for two people. Also, the little touches like the thick and soft toilet paper, coconut popsicles in the freezer, and bath robes were especially appreciated! Thank you Dana and Gregory - you have a magical and special place!"

"Expedia was the problem for the check-in process. If your travels take you to Hilo, this is the place to stay. It’s on quite possibly the most beautiful neighborhood in Hilo. Beautiful setting and great hosts. There is quite a bit of coqui frogs and it sounds like a frogpocalyose. Lol but after the first night, we slept through it. Truly awesome lodging option! Brand new rooms. So nice. 10+ AAA+"

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is our second time staying at Lava Rock Retreat. Two years ago, we stumbled upon this fabulous rental, and now we are fulfilling our promise to always add a few days here on every future Hawaii trip. We planned time here with the full intention to just enjoy the peacefulness of this property and keep the sightseeing activities to a minimum – that’s how much we love it. This home is pristine. Nothing is out of place, even the utensils are still perfectly aligned (which suits my OCD tendencies very nicely). I was so happy to see that there is not one sign of wear and tear at all, it is still in the same perfect condition we found it the first time. And bonus - the evening rain paired with the coqui frogs mating call creates the perfect symphony to which we fall asleep very easily.The owners are very sweet, non-intrusive, and have thought of every single detail in this home to ensure your stay is perfect. Will keep returning even after we've exhausted every activity, tourist site, and restaurant Hilo has to offer...because it is just such a treat to stay here. Aloha!"
