"The only thing I would change is to have separate comforters on the king beds. Comforters are the worst development in hotels. If I have a choice and I know a hotel will have sheets and blankets, I will always choose that hotel."

Kobe MerikenPark Oriental Hotel

Kobe MerikenPark Oriental Hotel

8/10 Good
"We booked this hotel 6 months ago and asked for a quiet room. They put us next to a family with a constant crying baby in and out of their room and balcony banging around. It amazes me that they had 6 months to manage our request!! However the room itself was really nice and an amazing outlook over to the sea. The breakfast was average. We did go to the roof Terrace twice for a drink and found the head bar man unhelpful and unfriendly. We asked to try the house wine which comes by the glass before ordering but were faced with a rather direct and blunt ‘NO’ which we found awkward. Not a great experience and the hotel ultimately misses out on business."

Seaside Hotel Maiko Villa Kobe

Seaside Hotel Maiko Villa Kobe

10/10 Excellent
"Amazing view from the room of the Akashi Kaikyou bridge and fantastic breakfast buffet with both western and Japanese food. Luxury communal bath was also fantastic and appreciate it being open late with spa quality soap, shampoo, conditioner and a few lotions and cleansers. Peaceful location in mostly residential area but close enough by train to Tarumi, Akashi, Kobe and Himeji which all offer lots of dining and shopping options as well as sightseeing. Room amenities included pajamas, slippers all necessary toiletries, hair dryer, small fridge, electric kettle, cofee, tea, and bottled water. 10 min walk from Maiko station is a little uphill and may be tough in the summer heat with luggage, but short taxi ride is also an option from the station. There is an elevator that will get you up the final hill to the hotel, which may be hard to spot for first time visitors, so be sure to google the entrance elevator to find it."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Harima?
The best areas to stay in Harima for convenience and quality are Himeji City Centre and the area around Akashi Station.Himeji City Centre is the main draw, primarily due to the iconic Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area is very walkable, with hotels, restaurants, and shops clustered around Himeji Station and extending towards the castle. Otemae-dori is the main boulevard connecting the station directly to the castle grounds, making navigation straightforward.Couples often find Himeji City Centre ideal for a romantic and culturally rich stay. You can easily spend a day exploring the castle and its beautiful Koko-en Garden, followed by an evening enjoying local dining options. The area offers a good selection of quality accommodation, from business hotels to more luxurious options with views of the castle. For travellers prioritising excellent transport links and a slightly different coastal experience, the area around Akashi Station is a great alternative. Akashi is known for its fishing port and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension bridges. The station offers direct and rapid train connections to Kobe and Osaka, making it a good base for exploring the wider Kansai region.Solo travellers often appreciate the convenience of Akashi. From Akashi Station, you can easily visit the Uonotana Fish Market for fresh seafood, or take a short ferry ride to Awaji Island.
When is the best time to go to Harima?

Towards the end of March and early April, you'll find various parks and castle grounds adorned with blossoms, creating beautiful scenery for walks and photography. The comfortable weather makes it superb for outdoor activities like visiting Himeji Castle without the intense heat or humidity.Autumn provides similarly agreeable temperatures, with clear skies and less humidity, which is excellent for sightseeing.
