Whether you’ve come to Cancun to explore the deep seas or simply to laze beneath the golden sun, here in the beautiful Garrafon Natural Reef Park to the south of Isla Mujeres you will be in your element. You’ll find hammocks, sun loungers and chairs as well as food and drink on offer if you want to enjoy some comfortable relaxation. If you’re looking for a more exhilarating experience, there are plenty of snorkelling opportunities and you can even go swimming with the dolphins!
If you’re feeling energetic, climb all the way up to the Yucatan Peninsula’s highest point, the Punta Sur Cliff. From this spot you’ll be rewarded with remarkable views of the region as well as the Punta Sur Sculpture Garden, complete with works by 23 artists from all across the globe.
Check out the Mayan Temple, the remnants of which offer a captivating glimpse into the heritage of the Mayans here on the island. Dedicated to the goddess of Ixchel, the temple suffered heavy damage from Hurricane Gilbert as recently as the 1980s, but retains its historic mystique. From the cliff top, one way of getting down to the waters beneath, is by taking an exhilarating trip on the zip line.
Meanwhile if you want to go snorkelling, equipment will be provided as part of your entrance fee to the park – just make sure you bring swimwear and a towel. You can head into the water from the shore or go out in a kayak to the deeper water. If all that exploration makes you hungry, you can even enjoy a complimentary buffet whilst you’re here.
Situated on the Isla Mujeres which is accessible from Cancun by boat, the Garrafon Natural Reef Park is open every day. You will though have to pay for most activities on offer.
