"The room was basic but very clean. The restaurant (for both an evening meal and breakfast) were very disappointing. The evening meal that I had (tikka masala curry) was average and overpriced. The breakfast was particularly bad. We arrived at 08:30 on 2 days and found that there was nearly nothing left on the 'continental' section, except for a few cereal boxes and a sorry bowl of prunes. The cooked breakfast is buffet style and was equally bad...the eggs had a hard skin on them and everything wasn't above luke warm. The staff were friendly, but there appears to be a lack of them in the restaurant (1 friendly lady running around doing everything was our experience). The location and hotel is very good for those out hiking, but as for meals I would try elsewhere. One thing that the 'spa' photos didn't capture was the "swimming lessons in progress" signs... The spa is actually a somewhat disappointing leisure centre that is not ideal for a couple on a relaxing getaway. Overall, the hotel is tired and in need of development, but if you're looking for somewhere comfortable to stay whilst hiking then it is an affordable option."

"Staff very attentive and jovial,nothing too much trouble.Bar had no real ale,if like me you prefer that and menu could be more extensive.We only had room only so cannot say too much about food.Will certainly stop there again as we have family locally."

"Staff did the best they could and were extremely friendly but the overall stay was a big let down. We quite understood that our room would not be ready before the specified time but, as the website had mentioned a snack bar/deli we thought we'd spend some time there. Unfortunately it had closed some time ago. Although there was comfortable seating in the reception area it was freezing. We subsequently discovered that the hotel is only heated for an hour or two in the morning and again in the evening. We ate in the dining room the first evening and found the food was mediocre at best. The breakfast, however, was extremely good. It's a pity that the breakfast times were incorrect on the website meaning that our travel arrangements meant we had to skip it on our second day. Overall, very disappointing. The hotel seems to be catering for coach parties visiting for evening meals and not for the individual traveller."

"The location of the property is glorious, spectacular views and if you do not wish to eat in the restaurant there are several others about a one mile walk away in Balloch or a short drive. Although our room was small, it was well decorated and had everything we needed. The only downside was having a room which overlooked the roadside. It was extremely noisy with guests and staff leaving/entering the building at all times of the night/early morning and the noise from the A82 from early hours was not good. You really need to take a room overlooking the water as it will be much quieter. Breakfast choice was really good however we were disappointed that several simple dishes e.g. eggs Benedict incurred an extra £5 charge! Selection of fruits was good however on our second morning they had no natural yogurt. Also too much oil used to cook the fried food. Scrambled eggs and porridge were however delicious. Overall a good stay and lovely staff throughout."

"My wife and I had a decent stay at the Royal Marine, though it was a bit of a mixed bag. The building looks magnificent, and although a little tired, has fantastic potential with some TLC. Our room was spotless, and we enjoyed paying extra for the sea view; watching the ferry terminal activity was actually quite relaxing. However, the hotel is feeling a little run-down and in need of some modernising. We also found the breakfast disappointing, which let the experience down. Whilst we enjoyed our visit to Dunoon, I doubt we'll be rushing back anytime soon."
