The magnificent mosaics and fantastic frescoes in this ancient Byzantine church make it well worth a visit.

The Chora Church is a centuries-old Byzantine church with an interesting history. The first church built in this location was commissioned in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine, who asked for it to be built to the west of Constantinople. This church was named “The Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora”, with “Chora” (the Greek word for “countryside”) referring to its location outside the city. In the early 5th century, the Theodosian Walls were built by Emperor Theodosius II, enlarging, and consequently incorporating the church into, the city.

The church which stands today dates from the 11th century and was commissioned by the mother-in-law of Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. Since its construction, many additions have been made to its interior. In particular, its mosaics and frescoes, for which it is renowned, were added in the early 14th century.

Following the Ottoman conquest and the fall of Constantinople in the mid-14th century, the church was converted into a mosque, and all of its Christian symbols, including its mosaics and frescoes, were removed or covered up. However, in the mid-20th century, the church was restored and converted into the Chora Museum. During this process, its mosaics and frescoes were uncovered and returned to their former glory.

The highlight of a visit to the Chora Church is undoubtedly its beautiful mosaics and frescoes. Enter the building and marvel at these religious works of art which depict biblical stories, major biblical figures, the life of the Virgin Mary and the life and miracles of Jesus Christ.

The Chora Church is situated west of the centre of Istanbul, in the Edirnekapý district of the city. It is quite far away from Istanbul’s principal cultural and historical attractions, yet swathes of visitors still descend upon it, attracted by the impressive mosaics and frescoes. The church is open every day with the exception of Wednesdays, and a small admission fee is charged. The easiest and fastest – and consequently the most expensive – way to get to the church is by taxi. It is also possible to take a bus as there is a bus stop close by. This will save money, but the journey will take longer.
