Sit back and relax in this iconic oasis of calm right in the heart of Manhattan’s concrete jungle.

New York may be known as the city that never sleeps, but visitors should never overlook the calm and tranquillity offered by the famous Central Park. Situated in the heart of New York between the Upper West and Upper East Side neighbourhoods, this beautifully conceived green space covers 6% of Manhattan, providing woodland, lakes and charming landscaped gardens. The park, which opened in 1857, was conceived by design duo Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmstead. The latter also responsible for projects such as the Stanford University Campus and the Niagara Reservation in Niagara Falls.

This is more than just a park. There is a variety of activities available for anyone who wants to take a more active approach to appreciating this iconic space. Take a magical ride on the famous Carousel, one of the largest in the United States. You could also hire a rowing boat from the Loeb Boathouse and paddle your way around the 8.9-hectare Lake. Another way of touring the park is by horse-drawn carriage if you’re visiting in the warmer months. During the winter, take to the ice on one of the two outdoor skating rinks.

Follow the 91 kilometres of walking trails and discover the award-winning Central Park Zoo that was re-built in 1984 to the highest standards. There’s also the Tisch Children’s Zoo for younger visitors to get hands-on experience with animals such as goats and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs. The two sections of the zoo are separated by the George Delacorte Musical Clock. Wait around for the musical display on the hour and half-hour where the clock’s bronze animal statues appear to come to life!

There are also countless monuments and structures for those interested in architecture and history. Belvedere Castle, built in 1869, is a beautiful Victorian folly built to offer the best views of Central Park. Free guided tours are available daily. The Arsenal, a former munitions supply depot for the New York State’s National Guard is one building that actually pre-dates the park, having been built between 1847 and 1851. The third floor is now houses the Arsenal Gallery which displays fine art and photography exhibitions. Throughout the park, you’ll come across statues and sculptures of Hans Christian Anderson and Christopher Columbus and other famous figures.

You’ll probably work up an appetite with all this activity. Choose from either full-service restaurants, or simply grab a hot-dog from one of the many cafés and vendors dotted around the park, and relax in one of the eight designated Quiet Zones available.

Central Park can be easily accessed on both the bus and Subway routes.

The Central Park Zoo is small, but that's not a bad thing - it's nice to be able to spend just a couple of hours at a zoo and then do something else with the rest of your day. The exhibits are quite nice and there's a good range of animals.
