Food is a huge part of Spanish life. Keeping up the long-held tradition for national dishes and tapas is one of the great passions of Spain’s people. The Central Market is an enormous fresh produce market in the centre of the city that marks the beginning of the day for many Alicante locals. Spread over two levels are more than 200 stalls selling mostly fresh produce and meat. Other items such as authentic souvenirs are also on sale here. The market is a great place to start your day of sightseeing, as you can pick up some good quality food to prepare a cheap and healthy picnic. The best part of the visit is seeing a traditional Spanish food market in action.
Fresh fish and seafood sourced from the nearby waters can be bought here, alongside good-value cuts of local meats. Fresh fruit and vegetables, ripened in the Spanish sun, are on sale across both floors. Wander through the aisles of vendors and take in the sights, smells and sounds of the market. No Costa Blanca picnic would be complete without some of Alicante’s famous deep-red tomatoes!
Head through the market’s grand art deco doors and into the bustling marketplace, where tourists and locals alike crowd around the vendors, snapping up goods. The market is busiest in the mornings, when it’s a great place to people-watch. Even at their peak of business, market vendors are willing to have a chat.
Alicante’s flower market is located in the rear of the building and is a picturesque sight of colourful blooms.
Central Market is located in Avenida Alfonso, a main street in the centre of the city. This area is easy to reach on foot and public transport and taxis are also available. Parking is limited and may be difficult to find. The market is open for business every morning except on Sundays. It’s free to enter.
