This ornate Valencian Gothic church is the Roman Catholic heart of Alicante and has been operating for more than 500 years.

Alicante’s Old Town is the home of the oldest operating church in the city. The Basilica of Santa Maria is a great example of the Valencian Gothic architectural style and its extravagant interior is decorated to match the façade.

Much of the church dates back as far as the 14th century, despite parts of it being destroyed in a fire in the 15th century. This church was built on the site of a mosque after the city was conquered and converted to Christianity. The church is now a beautiful attraction for visitors who come to see its splendid architecture, vast nave and the Mystery of Elche festival in August.

Visitors are welcome to attend the morning mass, a ritual that has occurred in this church for centuries. Watch the local townspeople file into the nave from the square in front of the church. There is a statue of the Virgin Mary atop the embellished doorway. Gargoyles scowl down from the spires above.

Take some photographs of the church’s ornate exterior but remember to leave your camera off when you enter its doors, as photos inside the church are prohibited. Sit on one of the pews and see a guitarist lead the service. Mass is only delivered in Spanish but is an interesting experience to see and hear, regardless of language differences.

The basilica has six chapels, which you can explore after the mass. See the original organ that dates back to 1653 and an altar from the 18th century.

The Basilica of Santa Maria is located in the Old Town and can easily be reached on foot from most areas in town. Visit the church any day but note that it is closed in the middle of the day. Admission is free. A schedule of mass times can be viewed outside the church.
