Picturesque gardens and historic fortifications make this a popular place to learn how Manila was defended against invaders.

The grand defensive structure of Baluarte de San Diego was constructed in the late 16th century by a Jesuit priest and is now one of the most historic fortifications in the city.

In addition to the solid defences, the fortification – known as Nuestra Señora de Guia (Our Lady of Guidance) – includes pretty gardens crisscrossed with pathways, sparkling fountains and also offers some fine city views that are perfect photo opportunities.

Baluarte de San Diego is easily reached via a stone staircase, and although the ruins are fenced off, there is a walkway which offers plenty of scope to view the historic remains. At the foot of the entrance stairs you can find information about the history of the fortification, including how the British forces damaged it in the mid 18th century and how an earthquake almost destroyed it altogether in 1862. Bombings during the Second World War also had a huge impact and extensive restoration work was carried out in the 1980s.

There is much to see at the Baluarte de San Diego in addition to the ruins and the views. The remains of what were probably stone towers can be seen in three large stone rings standing several metres apart, and ballistics fans will admire the original cannons to be found. Original inscriptions reveal their age and origin, including one that was cast in Barcelona on 25 October 1788.

The attractive gardens and grounds here are the perfect places to wander – in fact, they are so idyllic they are often used for weddings. So set aside some time to take in the old steam tractor, stop by the fountains and listen to the water, and spend a few hours ambling along the carefully laid-out paths. There is a golf course nearby, so when you see the sign to “Watch Out Flying Golf Balls”, it’s wise to take keep your eyes open.

You can reach Baluarte de San Diego by walking the short distance from Central light rail station – the fort sits at the southern end of the walled city of Intramuros. There is a charge for entry and the gardens and the fort are open every day.
