Visit the famous Black Nazarene icon and stay to admire the beautiful church it is housed in.

Quiapo Church in Plaza Miranda is home to the Black Nazarene, which attracts thousands of devout Catholics every week for its supposed healing powers. The statue is a wooden depiction of Jesus Christ and dates from the 17th century. Placed above the altar, the icon is draped in red robes and carrying a cross, and is the first thing you notice when you enter the church.

Whether or not you come hoping to witness your own miracle, or receive some of the acclaimed healing powers of the iconic statue, the church is undoubtedly one of the must-see sights in Manila. Quiapo Church was originally built out of bamboo and palm leaves when missionaries first came to the Philippines in the late 16th century. Like Manila Cathedral, this church has suffered an incredible amount of damage from various natural disasters during its life, including an earthquake and many fires, and the existing church was built in 1933.

Today, Quiapo Church is known for its live-streaming of masses and services, and you can even watch the Friday evening novena from a large screen in the square outside, with thousands of other church-goers around you. The atmosphere is buzzing yet peaceful, as hundreds of vendors make their way through the crowd selling religious paraphernalia to the devoted crowd. You can even have your fortune told or your palm read by one of the many fortune tellers, faith healers and palm readers selling their services in the area.

Located in the city centre, the church is easily reached by public transport. Those going by light rail, which is perhaps the best option in the busy city centre, can get off at Carriedo station and walk to the church within a matter of minutes.

The church is open to visitors every day and is free to enter, though photography is not allowed inside the building. Visit the official church website for up-to-date information on upcoming church services.
