Old Montreal

Walk through Montreal’s past in this beautifully-preserved part of the city, with its old European nuances.

One of the oldest settlements in North America, Old Montreal is more than just a beautiful, heritage centre. The cobblestone streets and the old architecture are a reminder of a different life that once existed within the walls of the city.

Located right in the centre of the city, between Downtown and the St. Lawrence River, Old Montreal is in an ideal location from where to start your exploration of the city.

Wander the streets and discover the beginnings of modern-day Montreal at Pointe-à-Callière, or take a stroll down the oldest street in the city, Rue Saint-Paul. Visit the many museums, charting the history of the city, in Marguerite-Bourgeoys Museum and in Château Ramezay, which was once an 18th century mansion, typical of the era. Art galleries and theatres also dot the area, adding lots of potential activities to your day’s itinerary.

More educational opportunities can be found in the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History. This museum showcases archaeological treasures from the first Indian settlers in Montreal, as well as exhibitions honouring the city’s history as a major fur-trader.

Outside, you can make your way over to the lovely Cabaret du Roy in Bonsecours Market, to sample some of the best local and traditional fare in the city. People dressed up as characters from 18th century Montreal will help to take you back in time. Couples will love the opportunity to ride around the cobbled streets in a gorgeous horse-drawn calèche. It’s a very romantic way to explore the area, as you trot past mansions and through narrow streets.

Old Montreal comprises of a very large area and it may take one or two full days to explore it properly on foot. There are options to rent Segways or bicycles of course, to speed up your personal or group touring. Guides and maps for the area, including information on local museums, are available from the tourist information centre.

Located in the city centre, you can get to Old Montreal in a number of ways, including bus, metro, ferry and through the underground shopping centre. Avoid driving if you can, as many streets are restricted and parking is limited.
