4. Soho

Once a sleepy residential district of old-timers, the area now known as Soho experienced a boom in the early nineties and has transformed into a district of bars, restaurants, boutiques and art galleries, while still managing to retain something of its heritage. Partly responsible for this transformation was the construction of the world's longest outdoor elevator system which was built to allow those living in the affluent hillside suburbs to commute into the city centre more easily.

5. Pacific Place

Get off the MTR at Admiralty and take the pedestrian walkway straight through to Pacific Place, a four-storey arcade which houses 5-star hotels, designer clothes shops and a swanky cinema complete with bar and leather seats. It is also home to Hong Kong’s very own Harvey Nichols store. First opened in 1988, the complex was revamped in 2007 under the inspired supervision of British designer Thomas Heatherwick. The redevelopment has given Pacific Place a welcoming atmosphere, and it’s far more sensitive and sophisticated in style than your average shopping centre.
