Tennoji Zoo was the third zoo to open in Japan when it was built in 1915. Today, the historic zoo’s 11-hectare (27-acre) grounds are home to approximately 230 different species of animals.
Walk through Tennoji Park to reach the zoo, which is easy to spot by its Snow White Clock Tower located at the entrance. Buy a snack or a drink from the café here to take with you throughout your visit or come back during the day.
Start by exploring the zoo’s north side, where you’ll find the African savannah area. Snap some pictures of zebras and rhinoceros grazing in the savannah. See snakes warming themselves on stones in the reptile house and observe the hippopotamus’ underwater action in a glass pool enclosure. Admire a diverse range of big cats and hyenas lazing about and sunning themselves in their own habitat.
Don’t miss the bird of prey exhibit. The massive, graceful birds make for fantastic photo opportunities.
Follow the walking trails south to discover the Asian Tropical Rainforest area. Watch cheeky monkeys swinging through the trees. Sleepy koalas and the only kiwi bird in Japan reside here.
Say hello to the elephants in their enormous enclosures.
Watch feeding shows at different times throughout the day. Enquire at the information desk to find out when you can watch your favourite animals receiving their daily meals.
Tennoji Zoo is located in Tennoji Park. Take some time to wander around the grounds and explore the surrounding park, with its traditional gardens and ponds.
The zoo is open during regular business hours. It’s closed on Mondays. There’s a small fee for admission. Download an exhibit map online or purchase one from the information desk at the entrance to help navigate the pathways, which are also well signposted.
