Space Needle

A towering icon rising high in the Seattle cityscape, this tall modern spire was built back in 1962 as the centrepiece for the World’s Fair.

Rising to an impressive 184 metres, Seattle’s famous Space Needle dates all the way back to 1962. Its unique futuristic design, with a panoramic viewing platform atop irregular legs, makes it an iconic fixture of the skyline.

Only 1.6 kilometres from downtown Seattle, the tower is easy to reach on the Monorail which leaves every 10 minutes from Westlake Centre mall and stops at the base of the tower. Get in the lift and ride all the way up to the observation deck in just a few seconds, after which you’ll be rewarded with captivating views of the city, especially breathtaking on a sunny day. You can even step out and look down from the outdoor terrace for a panoramic view. There are free telescopes dotted around the outside space, so you can spot the famous sights of this great city up close.

Alternatively, you can enjoy a meal at the rotating Sky City Restaurant right at the top of the Needle, with brunch, lunch and dinner menus on offer. There is also a great gift shop at the Space Needle for you to browse, where you’ll find plenty of space-themed souvenirs to take home with you.

It’s a popular area for younger visitors too – the Needle is surrounded by the Seattle Centre, with green spaces and a fountain as well as stalls that sell liquorice and popcorn. Nearby, you’ll find the Pacific Science Centre, the IMAX Theatre and the Willard Smith Planetarium, all offering hours of fun. The Centre House, meanwhile, contains a food court and even more entertainment.

Situated in lower Queen Anne, the Space Needle is open all year round and is just a short walk or 10-minute drive from downtown. If you come by car, parking is available free of charge.
