Enjoy sweeping city views and a romantic candlelit dinner while sitting in the comfort of a gondola on this century-old Ferris wheel.

A ride on the Riesenrad (Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel) is a must-do activity for any visitor to Vienna. Marvel at the panoramic views over the city rooftops while peering out of the window of a gondola. Treat yourself to a candlelit ride accompanied by an exquisite menu. After your Riesenrad adventure, explore the entertaining attractions in the 24-hour Prater amusement park.

The Ferris wheel opened in 1897 as part of Emperor Franz Josef I’s golden jubilee festivities. It is 213 feet (65 meters) tall, has 15 gondolas and takes about 20 minutes to complete a full revolution. Outside the ticket office is a museum exhibition, which takes you on a journey through the wheel, Prater and Vienna’s history. Find photographs, newsreels and video presentations displayed in antique gondolas.

As your gondola sets off, be enthralled by the scenery. Spot examples of the city’s famous Baroque architecture and lush green parks such as Augarten. See the rolling green hills of Vienna Woods. Be sure to bring your camera to snap some memorable keepsake photos.

For the ultimate experience, take a ride in a private gondola. Join your loved one for a romantic evening and an exquisite three-course meal. Sample mouth-watering dishes prepared by well-known Austrian chef Toni Schrei. Bask in the opulence of a gondola decorated with Swarovski crystals. You can even hold your wedding ceremony with up to 10 people.

The attraction rises above Riesenradplatz on the western side of Prater in the Leopoldstadt district. Get here by taking a train, tram or the metro to Praterstern square. Turn your ride on the wheel into a day at the amusement park. Ride roller coasters, visit Vienna Planetarium and browse waxwork models at Madame Tussauds museum.

Riesenrad is open year-round and has an admission fee. Family discounts are available, as are combined tickets for the wheel and other attractions in Prater. Visit the Ferris wheel’s official website for information about dinners and the rental of private gondolas.
