We arrived at night and our first impressions was a bit of a shock. We woke in the morning and we were now able to see everything. The location was perfect. The beach was right outside our door, with sun loungers available. It was the location that made this place. The beach area was beautiful. Plenty, of areas to swim. With the whales passing by at 11.45am every morning. Staff were super friendly when you saw them. They are only around for a short period of time but do answer emails quickly. Gardens were well maintained. We had 2 different rooms. One stand alone on the beach and the second room was part of the block. The rooms are very basic and dated. Beds were comfortable. Each room has a kettle and toaster. Our toaster was very old and rusty. In the beach villa there is an electric frypan. There is an area outside right near the beach which i am guessing is a hut for the workers. If they put a couple of BBQs here to cook from it would have been perfect. To be fair we purposly booked no kitchen as we were travelling with no kids and didnt want to cook. So it did serve its purpose. Would I stay here again? yes definitely. The bus runs at twenty to the hr and the stop is right outside. You are walking distance to edgewater and castaway. its a peacful spot with no kids. The price was cheap than a resort and the difference allowed us to eat out all the time. So i suppose that is what you have to way up.

Excellent location close to bus stop, top restaurants and beautiful beach which was great for walking, snorkeling, whale watching and soaking up sun. Room with kitchenette had all I needed for week stay.

Fine for a couple of nights.
This is nicely situated on the lagoon- but there are really no facilities other than a room and a bathroom. Fine for an overnight stay or two- and they organised an airport pick up at the ungodly hour the flight arrived.

Affordable and relaxing
Three of us shared the studio apartment for two nights. It was basic but clean and airy and the staff were helpful. The cabana near the beach was fabulous and we sat and watched the whales swimming by. It was quiet.

nice and right on a private beach
arrived very late had the shuttle waiting -at the airport - tidy rooms not flash but comfortable. room was a very short walk to the beach very private and lovely. the staff were wonderful, and we meet and spoke with the owner for many hours. we have inquired about staying again and look forward to it.

Nice motel in front of the beach
Staff was very helpful and welcoming. The room I stayed in was tidy and perfect for one person. The bed was comfortable. I struggled to sleep the first night with the noise of heavy rain falling onto the roof but some people might find it relaxing. The beach in front of the motel is amazing and it has a nice area to relax.

I needed somewhere to stay for a stopover. I arrived late and tired, but could not sleep because the wind rattled the Windows, then from dawn there was a cockerel that kept on crowing. Then at 10.30 I had a bang on the door telling me that check out was 10am, but as I arrived late, had no sleep, I was not aware of the checkout time. Nice location near the sea is a plus point, no TV in room

Beautiful holiday
Awesome stay at Reef motel,staff very friendly very clean, lots of information about the island. Recommended stay for anyone going to Rarotonga and no TV lol. 1 minute from the beach front. Going back next holiday will definitely book into the Reef again.

Booked here for one night, as close to the airport, just to have a shower and sleep after a 1 a.m. arrival. Horrible stuffy and dated room,roosters scratching and crowing around doors at dawn (although in fairness, this seems to be an island wide issue - Rarotonga is overrun by chickens). In daylight, the villas look ok and the location on the beach is good,but the motel room was horrid. Certainly NOT budget accommodation, very overpriced. Never again.

The Reef was exactly as promoted, right by the lagoon in the tropical paradise of Rarotonga. Quiet with wonderful outlook to the beach and lagoon.

Loved the beach!
We arrived mid afternoon, picked up our car at the airport and went to the motel. Nobody home. Did a circle island trip and went back at 4. Still nobody. Found out that the owner lived across the road so I went to see him. Apparently our booking hadn't come through. He came over, upgraded us to two beachfront units, apologised profusely, got us all sorted out, and we started the holiday. No stress! From then on, we simply got on with our holiday. There were four of us, me, my son, his partner and 5 year old son. We spent plenty of time in the water, and did lots of other island stuff during the day. The beach was superb and pretty quiet. We were in fact the only guests, it being the low season (early January). The Reef isn't a five star establishment or a resort, but it's got all you need to enjoy your holiday. Don't go there if you get stressed by things that aren't pristinely clean or lack of airconditioning.

Fine for 1 night
We stayed just the one night. Arriving at 11.30pm, the reception was closed, but someone was there to give us our room key. Rarotonga was unusually cold the week we were there and we froze all night. There was only a sheet on the bed and there was no spare blanket in the room. The accommodation we spent the rest of the week at had a blanket, so it was not just a Raro way to have no blanket.

We recommend Reef Motel because the accommodation is right opposite a lovely lagoon - the beach is white sand - where you can snorkel, sun bathe & rest on the beach and or check out the restaurants within walking distance - Kikau Restaurant! Great coffee (caffeine fix) at nearest resort. Our accommodation did not have the cooking facilities as shown in the website, this needs updating please! We used the kitchen facilities on the waterfront - what an amazing view to prepare kai & share with other families which is great for kids here. There needs to be more cooking facilities in the kitchen but once you ask, the owners and staff will do their best to accommodate your requests. Don't get confused with Reef Motel Atuitaki! This motel does not have a pool it is the infinity pool called the sea! Top room with balcony, great views & always hot showers. Downstairs apartments were dark one entrance. Simple clean rooms, great owners and staff support. Please be nice to the owners if you have any disappointments they will do their best to help you out. Forward your Flight details so there is someone at reception desk. The staff are only 9-4pm Mon-Fri 1/2 day sat- email for further info. If needing more than one bed for tamariki, just ask even for clean towels or more blankets, some cold nights July August. We highly recommend this accommodation: 1. close to beach 2. hot showers 3. close airport/ town/bus stop 4. clean rooms 5. shared kitchen 6. ENJOY :)

Nice Motel. Perfect for a short stay!
I was only in Rarotonga for 2 nights and The Reef was perfect for my stay there. It is 5 steps away from the white sandy beaches and so close to the airport. There are small restaurants, bakeries and convenient stores within a 5-10min walk and a bus stop right outside the motel. The rooms are basic but for a short stay you won't have a problem with them. Fans are in the rooms as well as a microwave, mini fridge, kettle, toaster and electric fry-pan. The only problem is that they have problems receiving Expedia bookings and with reception closing at 4pm you might be left without a room or a key. My advice would be to call ahead to confirm your booking and to ensure they leave a key out for you if you are to arrive after reception closes.

Absolutely wonderful!!!
Literally steps from the beach, this "motel" is finer than many four star hotels I have stayed in. As a guest, you have access to a private beach with chairs, snorkeling gear, and an outdoor kitchen with BBQ overlooking the ocean. While walking in the shallows we saw all kinds of triggerfish, angelfish, and tangs to name a few. Not to mention a giant blue starfish and some wonderful bright coral, literally thirty feet into the water. The snorkeling here is much better than on the Muri side, with far fewer people to disturb you. The rooms are large and airy, with a small kitchen and high ceilings. The bed is an actual queen bed, not just two twins pushed together. The bathroom is small with limited counter space but completely serviceable and the walls reach all the way to the ceilings unlike some other accommodations we stayed in on the island. The linens were clean and lovely. The owners were very friendly, hospitable, and accessible. They welcomed us kindly and were flexible with our check in and check out times.

Fine, but not for cooking your own food.
Pleasant setting. Second floor rooms look over palms to sea ~ 100m down track. Bright cheery room, comfortable bed, glass front, balcony. In room facilities only for to tea and toast. Shared kitchen is awful. This place is fine if you don't plan to cook your own food, hopeless if you do. Has steps up to rooms on second floor. And a room is not a luxury suite.

Disgusting
After costing me phone calls from Australia and emails staff could not originally find my booking. I had phoned the Reef Hotel again as I had an extra person stay they confirmed via email that my booking was changed to a 2 brm room but upon arriving it was still only a 1 brm. The curtains were in shreds hanging off the windows with the cords & clips broken, curtains did not cover all the windows so people could look in. No bedside table, no bedside lamp, no tv. Spiders and bugs on the windows and ledges, crockery all miss matched and stained inside the cups with old tea/coffee residue. The shower went from hot to cold and for the last 2 days had no hot water and only a dribble of cold water. The shower did not drain away and filled up with 4 inches of water whilst showering and still there an hour later. The levers on the windows did not open or close the windows they were broken so windows had to be pushed open by hand. No clean towels, sheets during the week stay. No tea towel to dry dishes. Everything old, worn and very dated. Very run down, gardens in a mess. Never would I stay there again. Office only open a few hours each day with no staff on hand should one be needed. Outside furniture broken, worn and hard. Total waste of money.

Shabby and tired but on a nice stretch of beach
Budget accommodation and you get what you pay for. We paid for a triple room and got a self-contained bungalow facing the sea with kitchenette and patio at front. The room was very tired looking, shabby and dirty in places, poor shower (very little hot water), rusty metal fittings in bathroom, etc (you get my drift). Having said that, the bed was comfortable enough for one night's sleep, and hotel is on a nice stretch of beach not far from Black Rock. We booked this room only for one night as it was close to the airport and because the knew the beach was ok for swimming. Wouldn't stay again though, would prefer to pay a little bit more for a higher standard of accommodation that it cleaner and has better facilities.

Camera spartana con lenzuola sporche ed asciugamani maleodoranti. Al nostro arrivo in piena notte ci attendeva una scarafaggio e prima di andare a dormire abbiamo dovuto sterminare un po' d'insetti. Unica cosa positiva il check-in veloce e la vicinanza al mare.

ラロトンガ島におけるリーズナブルな選択肢のモーテル
日曜日の午後に到着しましたが、スタッフは居ませんでした（終日）。部屋の鍵はメールでやり取りして場所を教えて貰っておりました。また平日の受付も16時で閉まってしまいます（9:00-16:00）。設備も清潔感はありますが、古いのは否めません。しかしまぁ、ラロトンガ島で一泊一万円程度で泊まれてブラックロックのビーチまで徒歩数分という立地は悪くはありません。 ラロトンガ島は日曜日はほとんどのお店が閉店しますので、食べ物の調達には注意して下さい。モーテルなので泊まるだけという感じです。徒歩5分圏内にレンタル自転車、15分圏内にコンビニ（19時閉店）があります。 鶏と犬が若干気になりますが、景色は最高です。リゾートとしてはお勧めできませんが、ラロトンガの自然をリーズナブルに満喫したいと考えるならば選択肢の一つとして考えても良いと思います。
