Comprised of a collection of hills, slopes and trails, this central park is the place to enjoy Montreal’s great outdoors.
Occupying the hill at the heart of Montreal, this grand park is a hub for the outdoor activities of the city. Traverse the 190 hectares (470 acres) of Mount Royal Park to discover picturesque vistas, dense forests, ice-skating rinks and toboggan slopes.
From the east you’ll enter through the Peel Street entrance and immediately be faced with the switchbacks climb to the chalet. Make the short detour to the Kondriaronk lookout for your first glimpse at the city from above. Named after a Huron chief, the popular lookout provides great views by day or night, when the city’s buildings are lit up.
The tallest of Mount Royal’s three summits is approximately 233 metres (764 feet) above sea level. Hike to this peak for the best view of the park. Admire the 30.5-metre (100-foot) tall illuminated cross that dates back to 1924, visible from across the city.
Cross to the southwestern summit by the Westmount neighbourhood. Slightly separated from the rest of the park, this charming area is known as the “petite montagne”, or little mountain.
While you’re on the west side of the park visit Beaver Lake. Embark on a walk around the lake to admire the trees that line its shore. Come to the park in winter to see the frozen lake transformed into an ice-skating rink. Rent skates from the Beaver Lake Pavilion to try out the popular Canadian sport for yourself, or watch the locals from the bank of the lake.
Other gear can be rented from the pavilion, including bikes and cross-country skis. Both offer a great way to explore the park depending on the season.
Toboggans are a great family activity and there are plenty of slopes to be found in the park.
Mount Royal Park is well serviced by bus but parking can be found along Remembrance Road on the northwest side of the park. The park is free of charge and open year round.
