The National Orchid Garden is located at the centre of the Singapore Botanic Gardens and is one of the world's leading authorities on orchid hybridisation, conservation and research. Opened in 1995, the garden houses 60,000 different plants, including over 1,000 different species and 2,000 hybrids.Within the orchid garden there are four different seasonal colour zones. Wend your way from the frosty elegance of the winter zone's blues and whites through to the warming reds and pinks of the summer zone, stopping to note the different varieties and how they adapt to their environment along the way. Keep an eye out for the impressive paphiopedilum or "Lady's slipper", so called due to its distinctive shape, or the significantly smaller oncidium ("Dancing ladies").As well as giving you the chance to soak in the colour and delicate splendour of the myriad orchids, the garden offers a wealth of fascinating educational opportunities. The visitor centre in the Botanic Garden is the place to go to sign up for the workshops or guided tours on offer. A regular 1.5-hour walking tour educates visitors on the intricate hybridisation and reproduction processes associated with the orchid.Visitors should be aware that the environment of the orchid garden is very humid. As such, you are advised to come prepared – bring plenty of water. There is also a shop on site where you can pick up some liquids if need be. The garden's gift shop is a treasure trove of souvenirs all based around the common theme of – you guessed it – the orchid! The National Orchid Garden is situated within the Singapore Botanic Gardens in the city centre. Easily reached by car or public transport, there is paid parking on site and plenty of free parking on nearby Tyersall Avenue. The garden is closed during public holidays and charges a small fee for entry.
