Journey to the highest point of the San Jacinto Mountains, and be rewarded with excellent hiking trails and superlative views.

At San Jacinto State Park and Peak, 86 kilometres of breath-taking trails and scenery await you. The naturalist John Muir once described this area as the most sublime spectacle on earth. When you come here yourself, you'll soon see what the fuss is about, with exquisite views and scenery that is just begging to be explored.

Kit yourself out with good walking gear and plenty of supplies before starting up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. In just over 10 minutes you'll arrive at the Mountain Station. Break yourself in gently with the Peak Trail, which leads to Round Valley at just 6.4 kilometres, it's an easy way to take in the scenery, and possibly spot wildlife such as woodpeckers, jays and squirrels. Next, present yourself with more of a challenge, by embarking on the route that leads to the summit of the peak. The 17.5-kilometre trek takes you through meadows and pine forest to a 700-metre elevation gain. The hike has been described as like walking in Switzerland while gazing down on the Sahara below.

Trails around San Jacinto Peak are rocky, but well-trodden and sign-posted. Emergency huts and rangers are dotted around the area. If you're looking for an altogether more demanding climb to the summit, the Marion Mountain Trail provides a steep route from the town of Idyllwild. A guided 'Cactus to Clouds' trail departs from Palm Springs Art Museum, but this is only recommended for serious climbers and hikers. Whichever trail you're taking, understand that temperatures up on the peak are considerably lower than those in the valley. If in doubt, check the State Park's website before you set out.

In summer, a number of official campsites are made available to hikers who want to spend more than a day here. When it snows during the winter, San Jacinto becomes popular among cross-country skiers.

Free parking can be found at the Valley Station, which is 3.2 kilometres north of central Palm Springs.
