Climb aboard the world's largest rotating tramcar up the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon to see Palm Springs from above.
As long as you have a head for heights, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is likely to be a highlight of your trip. Since 1963 the attraction has been lifting passengers from the floor of the Coachella Valley, way up towards to the peak of the San Jacinto Mountains. Around 12 million have travelled on the tramway to date.
Jump on one of the tramcars and enjoy the views. The ascent is a staggering 805 metres, yet it takes little over 10 minutes to complete. Because of the rotating nature of the cars, you'll have ample opportunity to see things unfold beneath you. Palms Springs and the Joshua Tree National Park are situated to the east. The San Gorgonio Mountain and San Bernardino National Park (home of Big Bear Lake) lie to the north.
Hop off at Mountain Station, and go to the viewing platform. This is the optimum spot for taking photos, as you're no longer moving. What you'll be able to see depends on weather conditions. You might be fortunate enough to make out the Salton Sea (which is in fact a rift lake) in the southeast, and Las Vegas up to the north. Once at the top of the San Jacinto Peak, there are endless walks and activities to get involved with all year round. Give yourself several hours to explore.
The Peaks Restaurant has a good menu which naturally comes with spectacular vistas – secure a table by booking ahead. For a memento of your trip on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, buy gifts from the souvenir shop – one is located in the Valley Station, the other one at the Mountain Station.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Valley Station is 6.5 kilometres west of downtown Palm Springs. Free parking is provided. The tramway opens daily, and tramcars depart every half-hour. In the summer, it's advisable to purchase ticket online. Tickets are non-transferable.
