Traces of bugs in master bed + Unresponsive Host
We were not allowed to check-in until 3:30pm. I travel 20 times a year for work and I am in and out of hotels. I have learned what to look for on a mattress to see if a hotel room has bed bugs. I do this for VRBOs as well. I was on vacation with my wife and kids. The master bed had signs of activity. To confirm I wasn't crazy, I sent photos to a friend of mine who is an exterminator. He agreed I should not stay there. I called the host at 5:00pm. The host did not respond until the next afternoon. They claimed their cleaning person checked it out and it was fine. The host will not call you and you cannot call and speak to anyone. You can only send chat messages or leave voice messages. They will NOT call you back.
Even if I believed them, at his point, I had already paid for one night at a hotel and was committed to a second night because it was too late to check out. I tried to negotiate something that would satisfy both parties. I purchased the insurance for this trip. The host suggested I file an insurance claim. So, that's what we did. It took 40+ days to get an answer and it was denied. Bed bugs are not covered by the insurance that you buy through VRBO. I then called VRBO about this and they said, "It is too late to do anything to help you."
The lessons learned:
(1) This place had bug activity in their mattress.
(2) This host is unresponsive. They will never call you. They would only send text messages through the VRBO chat and it will often take hours or overnight to hear back.
(3) Do not buy the insurance. It was a joke.
(4) Do not trust your host's advice and contact VRBO ASAP.
VRBO said I should have called VRBO sooner. I just assumed the host was working with me, not against me.
