Frequently asked questions

What can a history buff expect from a stay in Kyoto?
Kyoto and its significant historical sites draw tourists so consider a visit to the temples, especially if you love history. While you're visiting, you may want to admire the picturesque gardens.
How many historically relevant hotels are located in Kyoto?
In Kyoto, you'll find 3005 lodging options bookable on Expedia but not many designated as historic hotels.
What are the top historical sites and other places in Kyoto?
Kyoto is notable for its temples and monuments, and landmarks include Kiyamachi Street, Teramachi Street and Nishiki Market. Cultural venues include Pontocho's Kaburenjo Theater, Museum of Kyoto and Kyoto International Manga Museum. A couple of additional sights to add to your itinerary are Pontocho Alley and Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street.
What is a historic hotel like in Kyoto?
A historic hotel gives guests the chance to stay in a place officially recognised with a historic designation. Historic hotels throughout the world can be castles, stately homes, palaces or even pubs, lodges, old police stations or skyscrapers — any place of special interest. These types of hotels in Kyoto usually retain original characteristics like traditional architecture and period features within the guestrooms or public spaces.
What is the difference between a historic hotel and a heritage hotel?
The two are similar. "Historic hotel" is a term often used in the US, while "heritage hotel" is often used in Asia and Europe. Historic hotels tend to place more significance on the physical building and architecture. A heritage hotel draws meaning mainly from the cultural value and how it inspired the surrounding community.
Do historic hotels in Kyoto have modern facilities?
Yes, every effort is made to preserve treasured traditions and historic facades, but interiors include modern conveniences and safety features. Visitors should expect the popular amenities you'd find in a hotel such as private rooms with updated bathroom facilities, heating and air conditioning, and free and fast Internet. When you book a historic hotel in Kyoto, it doesn't mean you will stay in a place that's rundown or uncomfortable for guests.
