This conservatory houses a flower-filled forest and a colourful butterfly population that attracts visitors from around the globe.

Experience the flight and colour of the “flowers of the sky” in the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. This tropical glasshouse is crisscrossed by paths that grant access to an authentic natural habitat for around 60 different species of butterfly. Bring the family and learn about the lifecycle of these insects while you explore a natural landscape of trees and waterfalls.

At the start of your journey through the conservatory, discover the early life of the caterpillar in the Learning Center. See up close the feeding patterns and habits of these tiny invertebrates as they lie against their host plants. Observe the different stages of their life as they absorb nutrients from the plants and then use this energy to facilitate their transformation into butterflies.

The climate of the glasshouse simulates the humid conditions that are most ideal to the survival of the butterfly population. These conditions are similar to the natural climate of the Florida Keys, but the temperature and humidity need to be carefully monitored to make sure the butterflies can survive and prosper. Spot your favourite species of butterfly among flocks of hundreds, which scatter from tree to tree. Visit at dusk to catch a glimpse of the owl butterfly. It has a 28-centimetre (11-inch) wingspan and comes out in the evenings.

The greenhouse scenery features waterfalls, hanging vines and tropical flowers that line the pathways. This not only recreates a natural habitat for the butterflies, but also makes for a great background to any photos you want to capture. After a walk through the habitat, see butterflies preserved by local artist and conservatory owner, Sam Trophia, at the Wings of Imagination conservatory gallery.

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a short walk from South Beach and most areas of central the Key West. Drivers will find plenty of free parking.

The conservatory is open every day. An admission fee applies, although some discounts are offered for students, children and seniors.
