Palm trees line the pristine white sands of this popular Key West beach where locals and visitors come to swim, sunbathe and play water sports.
Though Key West is known to have many private beaches, this stretch of sand provides a welcoming base for visitors looking to swim or sunbathe. Smathers Beach covers around 800 metres (2,640 feet) of the island’s pristine coastline. Spend balmy days exploring the seafloor with a snorkel, skimming the surface of the water in a kayak or working up a sweat with some volleyball.
Find a quiet moment on the beach each morning before crowds descend on the sand for the day. Take a stroll along the waterfront. Stop for a coffee at midmorning and watch cars bring in throngs of sun-lovers. Enjoy the lively atmosphere and join in a game of volleyball, which can be played on one of three courts along the sand. Local players are usually more than happy to include visitors in a game so don’t hesitate to ask if you can join in.
Hire snorkelling and kayaking gear from the stallholders that line up along the beach in their trucks. If you’re feeling adventurous try paragliding above the waves. Go diving or snorkelling to get close to the fish and stingrays that bring the seafloor to life. Take a kayaking trip to explore other beaches up and down the coast.
After a day of activity on the water, return to the beachfront for a snack or meal. Fresh seafood, burgers and drinks can all be found in stalls along the promenade. As evening falls, walk to Mallory Square to watch street performers and crowds gather for the beautiful Florida sunset.
Get to Smathers Beach on foot or by bike from Mallory Square. The 1.6-kilometre (1-mile) trip takes less than 15 minutes. Those arriving by car will find plenty of free parking. Prepare for the day out and bring your own food and drinks. Use the picnic tables provided.
