Located on the shores of Holdfast Bay, approximately 10 kilometres from the centre of Adelaide, Glenelg Beach is a popular spot amongst tourists. The town was founded in 1836 by European settlers and has evolved into a thriving tourist beach destination, perfect for water activities, shopping and dining out.A 215-metre jetty stretches out to sea from the centre of the beach. It's an ideal starting point, no matter what you want to do. Whether you're looking for warm waves for a great surfing experience or a white beach for the perfect tan, there's a part of the strip to suit everyone's needs. Glenelg is a prime location for taking a relaxing dip in the ocean or, if you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can even charter a boat to take you out swimming with the dolphins. And there are always life guards on watch so you'll have the security of an extra pairs of eyes. Back on dry land you can get your pulse racing at The Beachouse amusement park or take a ride on the 25-metre-high Ferris wheel.Take in a romantic sunset vista at the end of the jetty before strolling back to shore to grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants on the strip. The aptly named Jetty Road is the area's shopping and cultural hub. Head to some boutique shops, take a break at a gallery and then head back for more bargains. Once the stars come out, Jetty Road is electrified as the cafés, restaurants and bars fill up and the sound of music drifts out over the sea. There are many means of getting both to and from Glenelg including by bicycle, car, public bus from the city centre or the tram. The Glenelg tram is the only tram still in operation in the city and is a unique way to travel in Adelaide.

Glenelg is only 5 Kms from Airport & a better alternative to staying in the CBD.

This is within 5 kms of Airport and a great alternative to staying in the CBD.

Be aware that there is no information available at the Glenelg Tram stop (not even a map of the route) to help first-time or any visitor to the area. Adelaide Metro needs to correct that - remove the cheap advertisement screens and replace them with some helpful information about the tram service. We were lucky that an off-duty driver took us on board a tram ready to depart to help us decide if that particular tram went near the part of Adelaide city we needed to go to in order to catch a bus back to our accommodation.

Great new playgrlund on the foreshore for big and little kids

We always take the tram to Glenelg every time we visit, just to see what has happened since the last time we were there.
