Shop til you drop at the historic and artistic Rundle Mall, located in the heart of the city.
Opened in 1976, Rundle Mall is South Australia's premier retail location and meeting spot with over 23 million visitors each year. It was Australia's first pedestrian mall and has become a mecca for cultured shoppers.Rundle Mall offers a wide variety of flagship stores like Myer and David Jones as well as over 700 other retailers and boutiques, so there's something to suit everyone's tastes. After checking out what the shops have to offer, sit and relax at one of the many mall’s eateries and bars. An eclectic mix of licensed street performers often line the pedestrian walkways, entertaining you as you shop. The mall is made up of a collection of beautiful, historic arcades and plazas that showcase an array of retailers and restaurants. The Adelaide Arcade is decorated in an ornate Italian style and it is said that six ghosts roam the building's floors. Competing with crowds of high-end shopaholics and bargain buyers, they may as well be invisible! The longstanding Regent Theatre building houses the Regent Arcade while Beehive Corner is known for its Neo-gothic architecture, usually reserved for churches. The Visitor Information Centre at the centre of the mall can give you all the details you'll need about these spectacular structures and you can take the self-guided Rundle Mall Discovery Trail to make sure you see every corner.Artwork is dotted throughout the pedestrian streets. You may not see a bull in a china shop, but there are four life-size pig statues to be found rooting through the mall's bins. These four critters are the creations of Marguerite Derricourt and were commissioned in 1999. The bronze bovines are affectionately known as Truffles, Oliver, Augusta and Horatio and love hogging the limelight. Other public art displays can be seen dispersed around the mall area. The Spheres, colloquially known as The Mall's Balls, are two stainless steel balls balanced on top of one another reaching four metres in height. There is also a Victorian-style fountain which was cast in the late 1800s.Don't miss the Rundle Lantern light display at the eastern side of the mall. 748 LED panels electrify the U-Park building façade creating a canvas of light. Shops and restaurants are generally open daily, but times may vary from location to location.
