This famous fine arts museum in Golden Gate Park was founded in the 19th century and offers an engaging space for plenty of creative exploration.

The de Young Museum first opened to the community in 1921 and is now one of the most visited art museums in North America. Travel through the Americas, the Pacific and Africa without ever having to set foot on a plane. Exhibits include art collections, textiles and costumes.

To accommodate the growing art collection and due to damage caused by a major earthquake, the museum was renovated and it reopened to the public in 2005. The new building is bigger in size and now has green credentials, thanks to its environmentally-friendly concept.

View the permanent collection with a tour through the many exhibits originating from different part of the world. Discover fascinating artefacts and objets d’art. Gaze upon the works of iconic American artists such as John Copley, Frederick Church and Thomas Hovenden.

Set aside some time to explore the de Young textile collection. Exhibits include Turkmen carpets and sumptuous 12th-century Asian silks as well as modern garments designed by Dior and Chanel.

Outside, you can find works by contemporary artists dotted around the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden.

The de Young Museum is located in the heart of the Golden Gate Park, within easy reach of the rest of the city. There’s parking available nearby and limited spaces on the surrounding streets. Take the San Francisco Municipal bus (MUNI) to Golden Gate Park and you’ll receive a discount on adult entry to the museum. The Golden Gate shuttle bus stops at the museum and other attractions within the park. Alternatively, hire a bike and cycle there. This is a good option if you want to explore the rest of the park.

The de Young museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with later closing times on Friday evenings from March until November. Note that the museum is closed during major holidays.
