This serene strip is the perfect place to clear the mind and reflect for a while, away from the busy city.

At nearly 6 kilometres long and located just a short walk from one of Seoul’s busiest streets, Cheonggyecheon Stream offers some peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in this vibrant city. Surrounded by greenery and crossed by 22 different bridges, it runs from west to east until it reaches its final destination of the River Han.

Cheonggyecheon Stream underwent extensive development and renovation and opened in 2005 to serve as a peaceful public space for visitors and residents alike. Before the renovation project, the stream was covered in concrete to disguise the filthy water that flowed underneath. It is now a favourite meeting point for families, groups of friends and tourists.

Cheonggyecheon Stream is perfect for exploring alone and at your own pace. Begin at the fountain at Gwanghwamun station, then take your time walking along the stream, looking out for the architecturally interesting bridges (don’t miss the Narae Bridge) and local art displays.

Alternatively, you can book a walking tour of Cheonggyecheon Stream. The guides can tell you more about the stream’s history, as well explain the numerous fountains, artworks, bridges and waterfalls that you will encounter along the way. Head to the information booth at Cheonggye Plaza for more details.

The Cheonggyecheon Stream is conveniently situated in downtown Seoul, meaning you can combine a visit with many of Seoul’s other landmarks and attractions, such as the Deoksugung Palace and Seoul Plaza. A visit to the stream is free of charge and it is open day and night, every day. After dark, the water and surrounding greenery is lit up.
