Half-way along Lodhi Road, west from Humayun's Tomb, lie the wide grassy spaces of Lodhi Garden. It's a place strewn with ancient tombs, English rose beds, toppling arches – and yoga devotees. For New Delhi's thronging inhabitants, this large wedge of greenery, sitting south-west of India Gate, is an important place to relax, stretch and 'greet the sun'. But it also happens to contain some of the city's rarest archaeological treasures – monuments from the century when Delhi was ruled by the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties – fierce Pashtun warriors from Afghanistan. It was in the 15th-century that these Islamic invaders arrived from the north, conquering much of northern India, including Delhi. And Lodhi Garden is where they buried their dead. The earliest tomb here is that of Mohammed Shah, the last of the Sayyids. It was built in 1444 – a pile of domes-upon-domes-upon-arches – and exceptionally well-preserved for its age. Walk north along the pretty walkways of the park, and an amazing view, onto the time-worn domes of the 'Gumbads', comes into sight.Bara Gumbad is, in fact, just a gateway to the adjacent mosque, but Sheesh Gumbad is the tomb of an important Lodhi family, which was once covered in beautiful porcelain tiles. Both were built towards the end of the 15th-century. It is at the very north end of the Garden that you'll find one of the most important of the Lodhi dynasty, in the Tomb of Sikandar Lodhi. He was both a poet and a notorious oppressor of his Hindu subjects – he once put one to death for saying that Islam and Hinduism were equally good paths to God.He was buried here in 1517, in a dark foreboding tomb enclosed by four walls of arched battlements. His successor, Ibrahim Lodhi, was the last Lodhi Sultan. He was defeated in battle by the Mughals, and not even honoured with a grave here. Now the tombs of the Lodhi dynasty lie still, even in the heart of Delhi – except for the occasional unfurling of the yoga mats.
