See live fish native to the River Mersey, study casts of dinosaur skeletons and get a virtual tour of the solar system at Liverpool’s natural history museum.

With five floors of exhibits, the World Museum Liverpool can easily take up an entire day of your stay in Liverpool. Learn about dinosaurs, space exploration and the history of human civilisation at this sprawling natural history museum. Highlights include an aquarium and a planetarium. Bring the kids, who will love the museum’s Bug House.

Since opening in 1851, the World Museum Liverpool has served as the city’s educational hub. Its permanent exhibition is split into sections on natural history, human history and space. The five floors of displays provide plenty of space to wander and explore for several hours.

Sit in one of the seats at the in-house planetarium. See close-ups of the moon and more as you take a virtual tour through the solar system via the museum’s digital projection system, which provides crystal-clear views.

See both local and exotic water-dwelling animals at the World Museum’s aquarium. Creatures like the thornback ray and the plaice, which are native to the waters off Albert Dock, can be found swimming about the tanks. Also, look for tropical species like the scorpion fish and the neon-orange clownfish, which are on display. Younger visitors will enjoy studying the sea life in detail using the microscopes located in a learning space next to the aquarium.

Head up to the fifth floor to see a Martian meteorite that struck Africa in the 1960s. Tremendous casts of dinosaur skeletons and rare fossils are part of the museum’s collection as well. Take your children to the Bug House, where they can see scorpions, cockroaches and spiders found across the globe.

Located in central Liverpool, the World Museum is easily accessible by bus or metro. There is parking available for a fee behind the museum. Open daily except for Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s days, the museum can be entered for free.
