At Sudley House see beautiful canvases and sculptures by British masters while learning how a wealthy Liverpool merchant lived during the 19th century. Once belonging to George Holt, one of the richest Liverpool residents of his day, this mansion features his extensive art collection in its original home. Works by Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and other famous 18th- and 19th-century British artists sit alongside Holt’s possessions, such as period clothes and objects. Whether you’re interested in the lifestyle of Liverpool’s historic upper class or you’re a fan of art from this period, Sudley House provides an enjoyable learning experience.
As you traverse the house, imagine George Holt living and entertaining guests amongst the incredible works of art throughout his home. Portraits by the likes of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John Everett Millais hang on the walls. Also, look for sculptures by Benjamin E. Spence, who was a Liverpool sculptor commissioned to portray various members of the Naylor family in 1852.
Explore the lavish rooms for a snapshot of daily life in the Holt household. The dining room features an exquisite table that seats 10, while a costume room displays period dress. Temporary exhibitions rotate through here as well, featuring clothes from the 1700s to today. Check out the Children’s Room to see the dolls and toy animals that upper-class children played with in the 18th and 19th centuries. The nearby Small World Room contains a collection of models, including trains, ships and houses.
Reach Sudley House easily by bus or train, as it is located just outside of the city centre. If you are driving, arrive early in the day, since parking is limited. The house is open every day outside of Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s days. Entry is free.
