A surfer’s proving ground by winter and a calm wading beach by summer, this is the North Shore’s most famous destination.

Heavy winter waves, sharp coral and a hefty undertow make Waimea Bay one of the North Shore’s most dangerous beaches in winter. This doesn’t keep professional surfers from braving its waters, making it one of the North Shore’s most popular surf spots. Watch surfers take on 9-metre (30-foot) waves from November to February and enjoy calm waters throughout the rest of the year.

Only experts should navigate Waimea’s treacherous conditions in winter. If you’re a novice surfer, don’t attempt to take on the waves. Pack a picnic lunch instead, stretch out on a blanket and watch the daring surfers from afar.

Of course, winter weather in O’ahu is still pleasant, so you can soak up the sun in 24 C to 27 C (75 F to 80 F) temperatures. Walk along the sand or wade in the water close to the shore.

Only small swells and a few waves disturb Waimea Bay during the summer. Enjoy the usual watersports without worrying about rough waters. Go swimming, snorkelling and even fishing from the beach. Kids will love exploring the rock formations that jut out into the water.

If you are visiting during winter, you may be able to catch the rare Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. The famous competition happens only when the waves are judged to be high enough. Named after a local surfer who served as the North Shore’s first lifeguard in 1968, the surfing competition shows off some amazing feats.

Waimea Valley’s botanical collections lie just across the highway. Here, you’ll see hibiscus, erythrina and other tropical species both native and introduced. Reach a waterfall in the jungle by a 1.2-kilometre (1-mile) trail to see more of the area’s native foliage. Take a cool dip in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall at the end of your hike.

Waimea Bay Beach Park features bathrooms, showers, picnic areas and lifeguards. If you are driving, arrive early in the day, as the parking lot can fill up quickly. You can also arrive by bus, which stops near the beach’s main entrance.
