The bohemian atmosphere and thriving arts scene make Raglan beach a vibrant coastal town, bursting with life and energy. Known for its fantastic surf, this once sleepy town has had a new lease of life in recent years and welcomes visitors of all ages to its sun kissed shores. Swells from the Tasman Sea coil around the headland and break effortlessly into a series of high quality and consistent waves. Even if you are not in the water at the time, it is a fantastic sight to see and well worth the 10-minute drive from the town centre. Parking is available at Manu Bay and offers three great look out points to witness the expert surfers tackling the huge breaks out on the headland. It is not advised to paddle out to the breaks at Raglan if you are not an accomplished surfer. Visitors can however book lessons at the surf schools at Ngarunui Beach and receive training from the experts away from the hazardous sharp rocks and strong rips at Raglan. Raglan is a town composed of varying artistic and musical talent and is renowned for its laid-back lifestyle. The quirky cafés and numerous galleries add to the relaxed atmosphere and offer visitors a great place to stop and have drink or a snack. On the second Sunday of each month, the Old School Arts Centre hosts local farmers and produce growers from around the region. This fantastic event allows visitors to sample the local cuisine, including home-made cheeses, chutneys and fresh organic produce. Hire a kayak and paddle the harbour at high tide to make the most of this fantastic coastal experience. For those not wanting to get their feet wet, horse riding and bike rental is available and is a great way to view tour the length of the beaches. Local tour agencies offer tours in the surrounding countryside areas giving visitors the chance to sample the breath-taking mountains, dense forest lands and nearby beaches. Raglan is situated an approximate a 45 minute drive west of Hamilton on the North Island of New Zealand. There are buses that run a few times a day from Hamilton to Raglan, but hiring a vehicle is advised if you intend to explore the surrounding areas.
