Hire a boat, enjoy a kick-around or just relax by the lake at this majestic Victorian park, named for the passionate Scottish monarch Mary, Queen of Scots.
Queen’s Park was designed by the world-renowned English architect Joseph Paxton. It was one of many public spaces developed during the Victorian period to provide a place of recreation in the increasingly difficult living conditions of the densely populated city.
The park is still a popular destination for Glaswegians looking to unwind away from the city streets. Follow their example and head over for a stroll through the grounds on a sunny day, stopping to watch the model boats lazily circle the boat pond. If it’s raining, head towards the Reptile House and spend an afternoon hanging out with lizards, snakes, giant snails and other exciting creatures.
Have a wander through the gardens and greenhouse to get acquainted with the flora and fauna, both local and exotic. Make sure you check out the spectacular Rose Gardens, planted for the World Rose Convention in 2003. The park is a great place for the avid birdwatcher, and even those with a passing interest will enjoy watching the tufted ducks, mute swans and mallards mess about in the pond. Visitors with sharp eyes may notice a circle of large stones – thought to be the remains of a military encampment during the sixteenth-century Battle of Langside, which took place on the site.
If you want to let off some steam, you can always scratch up a team for football or cricket on the designated pitches. Glaswegians love the beautiful game, so even if you’re a player or two short, you might find a local recruit. Tennis courts and bowling greens can also be found in the park. Children can hire sledges in the event of snow, so if the heavens open, make sure you head over for fun-filled rides in the frozen wonderland!

There is no such thing as a bad day to visit Queen’s Park, so just hop on a bus or train to Queen’s Park station or drive the fifteen minutes from the city centre and park in one of the streets nearby.
