A towering example of Gothic architecture, Glasgow Cathedral has been a spiritual and political touchstone throughout Scottish history.

Glasgow Cathedral dates back to the twelfth century and is a well-loved landmark in the heart of the city. An instantly recognisable feature of the local cityscape, it is a fine example of the lofty arches and intricate vaulted ceilings of high Gothic architecture.

A church this old and this impressive is a rare sight around the country, as many were destroyed during the break with the Roman Catholic Church in the sixteenth century. It was the only medieval church on the Scottish mainland to have survived this period – known as the Reformation – unharmed. Whilst it did suffer some damage during these turbulent times, this was quickly repaired by voluntary subscription from Glaswegians in 1574.

A central tenet of the cathedral’s local importance is its status as the purported burial site of Saint Mungo, the patron saint and founder of the city of Glasgow. His final resting place is said to be in the crypt, so take a few moments to head down and pay your respects to this important local figure. While you are there, look out for the statue of Bishop Wishart. Bishop of Glasgow at the end of the thirteenth century, he was a stalwart supporter of William Wallace and Robert Bruce in their long-fought battle for freedom and independence from the English.

Other features to look out for include the beautifully painted bosses in the Blackadder Aisle and the stunning assortment of modern stained glass windows. The most recent addition was created in 1999 to celebrate the new millennium. Its three sections represent the Holy Trinity and focus on the theme of growth within the teachings of the New Testament. There are free guided tours available from local volunteers for those who wish to learn more.

Just a short walk from nearby George Square, the cathedral is open to visitors every day and is completely free of charge. It is still a living place of worship with a public service every Sunday morning and a full choral evensong later in the afternoon, which you are welcome to attend. Buses and trains stop nearby, and if you wish to drive, there is on-street parking for a small fee.
