Meet the turtles and eels living in the sheltered coves of this beach park on the north side of the island, one of O’ahu’s best snorkelling areas.
If you’re interested in seeing what lives below the waves rather than surfing on top of them, visit Pūpūkea Beach. Huge tidal pools and colourful reefs make this one of the best places for snorkelling on O’ahu. Come during the summer when there are no waves and make sure to visit at high tide when you can swim at a safe distance above the rocky bottom.
Eels peep out from holes in the rocks and friendly turtles float around Pūpūkea. Keep an eye out for the black-and-yellow reef triggerfish, which bears the Hawaiian name humuhumunukunukuapua’a.
The shoreline at Pūpūkea consists of coral and rock. Wear water shoes or flippers for comfort and try to avoid bumping against the sharp coral. Don’t forget to apply plenty of sunscreen before snorkelling, especially on your back.
At the north of Pūpūkea is Shark’s Cove. The sheltered water and tide pools of this area are perfect for kids, who will love finding tiny crustaceans scuttling along the rocks. At high tide you can snorkel at Shark’s Cove to find it teeming with sea life.
A flat rock formation called the “Three Tables” lies to the south of the beach. Here, the water is often shallow enough that you can walk upright. Take care especially when the tide is rising, as waves can knock you off or into the rocks.
During the winter, Pūpūkea Beach attracts high surf that’s unsafe for snorkelling. Regardless, it deserves a stop as you travel along the coast. Enjoy its beauty and see surfers riding the high waves off the beach.
Parking is available along the road to the south. Buy water and the makings of a beach picnic at the nearby grocery store. You can also buy a packet of fish food to take with you while snorkelling to attract schools of fish.
