Covering 2.5 blocks of the city centre, Portland Art Museum is deservedly one of the most famous cultural destinations in the north-western United States.Housing around 42,000 pieces, the museum is renowned for its extensive Native American collection. It also exhibits top-class European sculpture and paintings, cutting-edge contemporary pieces, Japanese screen prints and photography exhibits.Over 5,000 pieces are held in the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Center for Native American Art which covers two floors of the main Belluschi Building. The collection is notable for its sheer range of artworks, from prehistoric times all the way up to contemporary indigenous artists, while also including works by native masters like Charles Edenshaw and Maria Martinez. The collections are divided by region, with galleries for local art, Meso and South America, and different areas of North America. There is also an extensive collection of contemporary artwork from Oregon and the surrounding region here.Spend some time going through a century's worth of catalogues, artist files and other archives in the fascinating Crumpacker Family Library, or take a stroll through the attractive outdoor sculpture garden.Artists such as Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp are on show across six floors in the Mark Building, along with a range of other modern works from all over the world. These galleries are accessible by tunnel from the Belluschi Building.The Northwest Film Center is also part of the Portland Art Museum. It hosts the well-known annual Portland International Film Festival every February, as well as the high-quality local Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival. The permanent film collection here is accessible throughout the year and contains a range of classic, avant-garde and international works.There is a coffee shop on the first floor of the Belluschi Building for when your feet need a break.The Portland Art Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, all year round (except for major public holidays). Entry is free of charge on the fourth Friday of each month, from 5-8 p.m. Tours are included in the entry price, and cover different collections throughout the week.
