The story of Henry and Georgiana Pittock is a fascinating tale of self-made wealth from very modest beginnings. Take the time to learn about the lives and works of these Portland pioneers on your visit to Pittock Mansion. This ornately decorated building is an example of the best that money could buy in the early 20th century. The building's design includes circular rooms, elaborate plasterwork and carvings in marble, while the furnishings are in beautiful, expensive hardwoods. Furthermore, the mansion's technology was cutting-edge for its time, including a central vacuum system and an intercom.Stroll through the house’s many rooms, enjoying the period paintings and antiques. Many of the ornamental silver and glassware pieces are from the famed Tiffany’s of New York. Admire the 1887 Steinway grand piano and Henry Pittock's sword, which was used for ceremonial occasions. Regular informative tours through the house are available for an extra charge – well worth it if you'd like to find out more about the history of the house and what life was like almost a hundred years ago. She also inaugurated the first Portland Rose Festival. At 304 metres in height, and overlooking Mount Hood and the Cascade mountains, it's clear to all how Pittock Mansion got its reputation for having “the best view in Portland”.The easiest way to get to the mansion is on foot. Follow the walking route which begins at Lower Macleay Park along the forested Wildwood Trail and it's around four kilometres to the top.
