The view across this remarkable cascading valley is one of Hawaii’s most iconic vistas.

One of the most dramatic landscapes you’ll find in all of Hawaii, the Pololū Valley Overlook is the perfect spot for taking in the stunning views that roll way out across the Pacific Ocean. To get there, drive along the picturesque trail of the Akoni Pule Highway, flanked by the Mauna Loa volcano, rising steeply above you on one side and the sprawling ocean on the other, until you arrive at this vantage point.

Look across the cliffs and you’ll see the pure and unspoilt coastline of the Big Island, as well as the tropical rainforest that grows from the volcanic mountain. Some years ago, this prehistoric-feeling backdrop was used as the location for filming ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Many people come here simply to enjoy the view from the outlook. However, if you’re up for more of a challenge, you can descend right down to the valley floor by hiking down the cliff along a steep path. You’ll need to wear sturdy footwear to tackle the steep and rugged pathway, but at the bottom, you’ll get to spend some time on the beach below.

The beach looks beautiful, but the surrounding sea has strong currents so swimming is definitely not recommended. But if you head for the creek that runs through the valley you can dip your feet in the refreshing water there instead.

The Pololū Valley Overlook is best accessed by car as the area isn’t serviced by public transport. A taxi is another, but costly option. Free parking is available but there are limited spaces. Visitors often park along the edge of the road when the car park gets full. If you intend to hike to the bottom of the valley, you must bring water with you. Bear in mind that the outlook doesn’t have any amenities.
