"The place is located at South Avenue within the ancient city, near to Pingyao South Gate, or 15min walking distance from Small South Gate (alternative, take buggy for 10yuan). The signage for Hongyuyuan hotel was not obvious, it is easier to find using address. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The place is an ancient building, do not expect perfect heating during winter. Food and massage are nearby, is very convenient. The hotel have an restaurant, the food is not bad"

Elsewhere Hotel The former residence of the draft bank

10/10 Excellent

"What a privilege to stay in such an old property with so much history. The room was a lovely size, very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was tasty too. We asked if we could have a train station pickup at the last minute and Alice sorted one for us. Thank you to all at the hotel, they were all such lovely people."

Elsewhere Hotel Inn Ancient City Center Branch

10/10 Excellent

"The hotel is in an unbeatable location. The room was very nice, although the air conditioning unit’s mounting bracket could use some fixing. The bathroom was fine. The highlights were the wonderful woman who runs the place and the hotel’s charming, traditional style, which has been very well maintained. The street it’s on is fantastic, and this town was my favourite of the 15 places I visited during my trip to China."

Water Hotel Pingyao

10/10 Excellent

"Lots of thoughtful touches. Well appointed room, jasmine tea leaves with a tea service in the room. Extensive personal breakfast, with good coffee and choice of Western or Chinese option. Great location in the middle of ancient city - everything is happening outside your doors and yet peaceful courtyard. Free Pickup and drop off from train station was a nice service with courteous attention. Overall well run hotel and well appointed. Parting gift of intricately paper cut motifs.’"

PingYao ChengJia Laoyuan Hotel

"We found the hotel to have a lovely traditional atmosphere, the rooms were large, with many traditional features, we had Chinese breakfast that was interesting. Misha welcomed us and was extremely helpful, we had free tea, we were picked up and dropped off at the station, we loved her! And she spoke very good English! Lovely experience, we were very happy and impressed with it"

The main thoroughfares, like Nan Dajie (South Street), are bustling with shops, restaurants, and guesthouses, all housed in historic buildings.

Couples looking for a romantic and culturally rich experience will find staying inside the city walls perfect. You're within walking distance of all the major attractions, such as the Rishengchang Draft Bank Museum and the City Wall itself. Evenings are particularly special, with the city lit up by lanterns, offering a truly memorable setting.

For travellers interested in history and authenticity, staying within the walls offers unparalleled convenience. You can easily explore the numerous temples, government offices, and residences that showcase Pingyao's past as a financial centre.
