Exceptionally clean, thoughtful provision of amenities like shampoo and toothpaste etc., very comfortable bed, delicious healthy breakfast each day, lovely garden. Good advice on things to do in the area. Close to Uncle Robert’s fun music night, market.
4th visit to Ma'ukele Lodge, and i always stay in the Hawaiin Room. This place is a real gem.
I love the Pahoa rustic vibe, the grounds are so unique, a discovery at every turn. The lave glow is amazing to explore.
Rooms are very comfortable, beds are big, linens ard top quality and many smsll touches mske you feel welcome. Fridge and microwave, plates etc to be self sufficient.
Breakfast is always amazing, fresh fruits and more, shared with the gekkos on the outside balcony.
Raven and Mark make every effort to make your stay engaging, informative and memorable.
Try to be there on Wednesday and go down the road to Uncle Roberts night time market, a real local experience.
For those who are looking for authentic travel, look no further. Ma’ukele Lodge bed and breakfast in Pāhoa is a special experience in a stunning location. To me, feels like real Hawaii. I feel honored and grateful to have stayed there and met Raven and Mark. We still feel their Aloha spirit. When I return one day, I will take more outdoor showers, heaven!
As noted in the reviews already posted, if you are accustomed to staying in nice, clean hotels with amenities, or even VRBOs with at least all the comforts of an average home, then I do not recommend a stay here. The hosts are very kind and gracious, but everything else about our stay here was not what we had hoped for. A “true island experience” included wide open doors and some unscreened windows. While we were forewarned about the nighttime “songs” of the frogs, etc., we were not expecting all the bugs (including problematic ants, roaches and gnats) that came along with the open doors and windows. Also to note is that the location is off the beaten path, with very little to see or do nearby. While it looks close on the map, even Volcanoes National Park was an hour’s drive away. Parking there at the lodge for us was not fun, as we were traveling in a large SUV that was very difficult to maneuver into the small parking area provided (especially arriving after dark after long days of sightseeing). Since the hosts were so nice (very helpful and friendly, even made suggestions (with maps) of places to visit, which we really appreciated), I really struggled on whether to leave a review at all. But, as a traveler who relies on people’s honest reviews when making lodging selections, I ultimately decided I needed to leave my honest review.

Outside shower was pleasant experience once I got used to idea! Walk to lava beach on property was extraordinary experience. Breakfast Food was excellent. Hosts were generous, kind and thoughtful. Lack of central air was disappointing but numerous fans helped a lot and open screened windows let breezes in. Still humid though. Loud Background noise of night critters was not a problem. Actually soothing and comforting after a day of traveling.
We enjoyed our stay at this off-the-beaten path bnb. Hosts were very informative and welcoming.
Stay here if you want to fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and birds, shower under the moonlight, and breakfast with the geckos. There’s no A/C but plenty of fans kept us cool.
If you want an experience and not a hotel, this is a good place to consider. Don’t complain if you wanted a Marriott; it’s not the Marriott.
The hostess and host are kind and genuine.
The lodging is nestled in a neighborhood, but it feels almost like a jungle. The shower is outside and is reasonably private.
Don’t mind the geckos lingering nearby as you enjoy fresh fruit for breakfast.
If you like hotels with all the amenities, this might not be the place for you.
This is an amazing bed-and-breakfast!
The house is surrounded by tropical plants and wildlife.
All night you will be serenaded by frogs and birds.
Our room had an outdoor shower and bath that were private and secluded.
Every morning we had coffee and a wonderful fruit bowl.
We were also offered eggs and toast.
Our hosts, Raven And Mark, were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.
They had great recommendations on local beaches, local restaurants, and good places to visit all over the big island.
I will definitely be staying here again!
What isn’t unique about this place? It’s an intimate b&b, we stayed in the larger room which has three full size beds with nets and a kitchenette. The bathtub and shower are outside - fenced from prying eyes but fun. The decor is Bohemian Eclectic and I spent quite a bit of time in the living room of the main house jamming with host Mark - he just got a stand up bass to go with the piano and ukes I remember from last time (did I mention we came back). Excellent breakfast on the deck looking at the ocean, geckos peeping at us. It’s not for people who absolutely need AC or who can’t handle the chorus of frogs doing their frog song at night. It’s way out there, geographically and figuratively. But we love it.
Raven is a sweet and phenomenal host, and the property is beautiful! Gorgeous views, private beach access to watch the sunrise. I loved the outdoor shower, and the beds were really comfy!
The Ma'ukele Lodge is a very unique place. The grounds and beach are gorgeous. The lava flow is right between the house and the ocean, and walking to the beach was an amazing and beautiful experience. The breakfast was great and so was sharing it with the geckos.
This is a B&B, Raven & Mark’s home (not a hotel). We loved the location in Pahoa which was impacted by the lava flow in May 2018. Raven makes the best breakfast to get your day started. Mark has all these great stories, and tells you where to visit and what trails to do at the Hawaii Volcano State Park. The backyard of their home is just breathtaking, and you’ll never see this anywhere else!! We stayed in the Hawaiian Suite which had 3 big beds, a microwave and a mini-refrigerator stocked with drinks, fruit and chocolates. There was an outdoor shower (wonderful to use) or tub, and a backyard to take in the island feel. We are in Kona now and it’s so touristy, crowded with people and cars. Wish we could be at Raven & Mark’s oasis.
Uniquely quirky lodge with authentic Hawaiian flair. In the Hawaiian suite, you’re showering outdoors under a canopy of tropical plants in a lush garden, enveloped by the chirping of hundreds of coqui frogs and the distant rumbling of waves crashing onto the rugged lava coast. The hosts are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and prepare an amazing breakfast that you can eat on the terrace with ocean view. Definitely not the typical hotel experience but so much more memorable.
We stayed 2 nights there, amazing stay in a peaceful area. Wonderful hosts, great advice from Mark, delicious breakfasts (homemade by Raven, with fresh products from the garden), and direct access to the Ocean. We strongly recommend this place, looking forward to a next visit :)
Denis & Odile.
This property and it’s caregivers, Ravin and Mark are all a hidden gem in this area. I would take this beautiful, detailed property any day over corporate owned resorts, if you want the true Hawaiian experience I recommend visiting Ma’ukele Lodge in Kalapana. If you are lucky enough to catch Mark on a nom work day ask him for a tour of the area, he is very knowledgeable and will share secrets of this magical place.
I agree with the previous reviews. This was the first time we’ve ever done a BNB and I was very happy with the balance of privacy and also feeling like I was visiting a relative. Raven and Mark are both super wonderful people full of aloha and care. Location was perfect for us to do all of the things we wanted to do on the eastside of the island and the weather was amazing! Definitely would book again!!
Great location.
Mark and Raven are stellar hosts.
They are caring, affectionate and knowledgeable.
Breakfasts served were delicious and healthy.
Best part is both help you feel comfortable and at home.
Great hosts, lavish fruity breakfasts, and on site musical gear and writing supplies for those bursts of artistic inspiration
