This historic picturesque harbour is packed with restaurants and bars creating a lively atmosphere that attracts both locals and visitors.

Established in the 17th century, the Nyhavn or New Harbour, was originally a gateway into the old city. It had however fallen slowly into disrepair after nearly a century of neglect. Today, it is a lively entertainment hub with great bars and restaurants. It is still home to a host of boats and historic ships that are permanently moored here and can be viewed from the harbour’s edge.

Following many years of little or no use by vessels following the growth in road transport, the port had become run down and seedy, frequented by prostitutes, gamblers and hardened drinkers, and avoided by most visitors unless they were looking for a tattooist! From the 1970s, the area was gradually cleaned up and transformed into what you see today a modern district populated by artists and designers who mix happily with visiting locals and their families.

The cobbled streets around the waterfront are lined with attractive town houses painted in pastel colours, many of which now house bars or restaurants on the ground floor with accommodation or studios on the upper floors. Among these buildings, you will find the former home of the celebrated author Hans Christian Andersen who lived here in the 1800s.

In 1977, the Danish National Museum nominated part of the area to become the Veteran Ship and Harbour Museum. Several classic vessels are moored here offering a glimpse into the harbour’s rich nautical history and serving a reminder of its vital role in the import and export of cargo.

The northern side of the harbour is more exposed to the sun and is therefore where you’ll find the majority of bars and diners. Join the locals and take advantage of any sunshine by grabbing a pavement table and enjoying a drink or something to eat. For a true Scandinavian snack, try some pickled herring. The grilled seafood is excellent here too.

Situated on the eastern side of the city, Nyhavn is easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. As much of the city centre is pedestrianized, driving is not generally recommended and parking is limited. There are also several bus routes that stop at the harbour.
