Stories of the typical medieval folk of Stockholm are brought to life amid the warship and old graveyards buried underground.

Constructed on the site of extensive archaeological findings, the Museum of Medieval Stockholm describes the city’s development and history. Beneath the Norrbro bridge, find parts of the old city ramparts alongside a military vessel and many other medieval treasures. Take the guided tour in English to fully appreciate the context behind the exhibits.

Descend the old stone bridge’s steps to this underground museum and see 180 feet (55 meters) of the 16th-century city wall. Then see how the museum has portrayed medieval Stockholm through re-creations of the old market square, the church and the city council. Discover the stories of typical medieval figures who existed without the conveniences of today and consider how different their lives were compared to modern-day citizens.

Learn about the eerie gallows and other methods of torture and punishment. Inspect the remains of the Helgeandshuset graveyard and Riddarholmsskeppet warship, which dates back to the 1520s. Spot the king’s secret tunnel that led to the castle. The museum was opened in 1986 and stands on the location of a successful archaeological dig from the 1970s.

Embark on the museum’s Medieval Stockholm Walk, which is available in summer. It takes you through some of the key attractions of the Old Town. Browse the museum shop, where postcards, accessories and jewelry are among the history-themed items for sale. Lectures, workshops and temporary displays also take place in this subterranean museum.

Note that the museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from noon until late afternoon, staying open later on Wednesdays. Entrance to the museum and guided tours in English are free.

The Museum of Medieval Stockholm is on the eastern edge of Riksplan Park on an island in the Norrström river. Walk halfway across the Norrbro bridge and descend its side steps to get here.

While in this neighborhood, visit other surrounding sights such as the Kungliga Operan, the Tre Kronor Museum and St. Jacob’s Church.
