Visit this grand cathedral to uncover the permanent collection ofhistoric paintings and sculptures, the frequent live music performances and therotating art exhibitions that are found within its walls. Dating back to the13th century, the Great Cathedral of Stockholm, known as Strokyrkan to thelocals, is the oldest church in the Old Town. Today it remains a popular venuefor royal weddings and coronations.

Admire the Gothic architecture that defines the church interior,including an impressive vaulted ceiling from the 15th century. See a 3-metre(11-foot) statue of St. George and the Dragon that was commissioned by aSwedish statesman following the Swedish victory in the Battle of Brunkeberg, akey battle against the Danes.

Look out for Vädersolstavlan (theSun Dog Painting), said to be theoldest recorded image of Stockholm. Painted in 1636 by Jacob Heinrich Elbfas,the image shows a halo-like atmospheric phenomenon occurring over the historiccity. While the original painting’s whereabouts is unknown, this stunning copyis still impressive. The cathedral also features works by German artist DavidKlöcker Ehrenstrahl that depict the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment.

Visit the cathedral over summer and you’ll be met with the beautifulsounds of live music emanating from within. Listen to traditional organ music,choral arrangements and classical numbers by Johann Sebastian Bach and FranzSchubert. Concerts are subject to a small fee and a full program can be foundon the cathedral’s website. Here you’ll also find information about upcomingart exhibitions. Previous shows have included Images of Cristina, a beautifulcollection of works belonging to the Swedish queen.

Strokyrkan is located next to the Stockholm Royal Palace in Stockholm’sOld Town. Some street parking is available but is expensive and buses and trainsprovide a great alternative. The cathedral is open daily and admission includesa guided tour in English or Swedish. A daily prayer service is conducted inboth English and Swedish each morning.
