Dating back to the13th century, the Great Cathedral of Stockholm, known as Strokyrkan to thelocals, is the oldest church in the Old Town. Today it remains a popular venuefor royal weddings and coronations.
Admire the Gothic architecture that defines the church interior,including an impressive vaulted ceiling from the 15th century. See a 3-metre(11-foot) statue of St. George and the Dragon that was commissioned by aSwedish statesman following the Swedish victory in the Battle of Brunkeberg, akey battle against the Danes.
Look out for Vädersolstavlan (theSun Dog Painting), said to be theoldest recorded image of Stockholm. Painted in 1636 by Jacob Heinrich Elbfas,the image shows a halo-like atmospheric phenomenon occurring over the historiccity. While the original painting’s whereabouts is unknown, this stunning copyis still impressive. The cathedral also features works by German artist DavidKlöcker Ehrenstrahl that depict the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment.
Visit the cathedral over summer and you’ll be met with the beautifulsounds of live music emanating from within. Listen to traditional organ music,choral arrangements and classical numbers by Johann Sebastian Bach and FranzSchubert. Strokyrkan is located next to the Stockholm Royal Palace in Stockholm’sOld Town. Some street parking is available but is expensive and buses and trainsprovide a great alternative. The cathedral is open daily and admission includesa guided tour in English or Swedish. A daily prayer service is conducted inboth English and Swedish each morning.
