St.Maarten’s quiet coast town of Mullet Bay has a secluded beach with a relaxingatmosphere. The sandy bay has a few rocks to explore and warm waters forwatersports, including good a surf break within paddling distance. Palm treesand beach bars line the bay and offer some shade from the Caribbean sun anddelicious tropical cocktails.
MulletBay was badly damaged by Hurricane Luis in 1995. A busy luxury resort thatlooked out over the beach was partially destroyed and never rebuilt, so whatwas once one of the busiest beaches on the island is now very peaceful andtranquil, especially on weekdays.
Arriveearly to get the best spot on the beach: a patch of white sand under one of thetall leafy palm trees. Hire a deckchair or umbrella from the kiosks on thebeach, or grab some sports gear from a nearby rental shop and explore the warmcrystal clear waters.
The beachis perfect for offshore surfing because it is in the path of prevailingnortherly winds, giving it some of the best surf on the island. Few swimmersvisit the bay so stand-up paddleboarders and surfers can have the waves tothemselves.
The beachhas beautiful and fascinating snorkelling on both rocky edges of the bay. Seesome of the flora and fauna thriving underwater by the rocks, including somecolourful fish and corals. When you are back on land, take in the sunset viewswith a drink or meal at one of the beachside bars and restaurants.
MulletBay is located 20-minutes’ drive from the airport on the west coast of theisland’s Dutch side. Enjoy free parking close to the beach but take valuableswith you or leave them at your hotel, as the area is not under closesurveillance.
