The best area to stay in Montpellier is the historic city centre, particularly around Place de la Comédie and the Écusson district.
This area is the heart of Montpellier, known for its pedestrianised streets, grand Haussmannian buildings, and extensive shopping opportunities. Place de la Comédie, a large public square, is an excellent landmark to navigate by, and it's surrounded by shops, theatres, and restaurants. The Écusson, the old town, branches off from here with its winding, narrow streets.
Couples will find the Écusson district particularly appealing. It's filled with independent boutiques, art galleries, and small, intimate restaurants superb for a romantic evening. You're also just a short walk from the Fabre Museum and the beautiful Esplanade Charles de Gaulle.
For those prioritising convenience and direct access to transport, staying near the Saint-Roch train station is a good option.
